The dinosaur dilemma

Making my scaly wall of spikes recently, I have come to an impasse. Do I take what is essentially a tank with a potential las-cannon, or potentially the best kamakazi unit I have seen in a while. Having a monster in a 500pts army is always brilliant to see a centre piece and a bastiladon is a lovely model and it's difficult to field in large battles. I also don't use it enough and would love to have one from the get go.

Now one of my new favourites is my small unit of ripperdactyls who are insane! I love the models and I love their rules. Firstly they are basically enraged parrots/pigeons (that's right, they are angry birds!) They are flying cav so they have vanguard, armour pricing and two attacks each with frenzy. All of this however has been eclipsed by their road rage rule. In the box with the terrifying set of poultry, you get a lustrian bloat toad model. If one of your units finds this little critter in one of their back pockets, the rippers get an extra d3 attacks! Oh and they have killing blow.

Either way I'm sure each would serve a purpose and both units have been painted, based and are ready to go! Needless to say I have to choose between the two as I don't want to sacrifice my Saurus brick!

Food for thought this week building up to the big kick off (scrap wise) and best of luck with your own conundrums in your own base camps. Looking forward to it and see you on the battlefield.

  1. An interesting article Liam. Having played Lizardmen since my return to the hobby last year I have always been impressed by their array of brilliant models and, corresponding, diversity of builds. The Bastiladon is amongst my favourite Lizardmen models and, in my opinion, is underused and undervalued by many Lizardmen players. The Solar Cannon is a strong bound spell that can really cause havoc for the enemy and, used in conjunction with a Slann, has your opponent really struggling to counter the Lizardmen's impressive magic arsenal. I personally haven't used Rippers, opting for Terradons instead. Though, as you say, their rule set unleashes chaos! Good luck with your list and throughout the league. I look forward to more of your views! James

  2. On paper I LOVE the Bastiladon (although the toughness is rather low for my liking compared to what the fluff says). However, it has NEVER worked for me (which may or may not be down to my dogy dice rolls). Saying that, +1 I for Lizardmen is NOTHING to be sneezed at, especially if you've got a Slann chucking around Hand of Glory to further mess things up for your opponent! Rippers are amazing too.

In short, you've got an army of sentient dinosaurs riding bigger dinosaurs. What's not to like?

    1. It was a shame reading the rules about how squishy the bastiladon was but I got to say in a 500pts battle a 2+ armourimpressive but alas no Slann as of yet

  3. I'm not sure I'd use it in a 500 pt game. That's a good 30% of your points gone on one model that won't have the necessary support in a game that small (or provide the same benefit that it would in a larger game). Much better to stick the points into some Skinks. 20 poisoned ranged attacks will make a massive difference in a low points game! That being said, it IS a sweet model!
